+ Continuing a recent trend, applications to colleges were up again in 2005, following a slight dip the previous year. More than 70 percent of colleges reported increases in applications, according to the 2006 “State of College Admission” report, by the National Association for College Admission Counseling.
+ The Department of Education on Friday ordered every state to explain how it will have 100 percent of its core teachers qualified — belatedly — in the 2006-07 school year.
+ In the meantime, some states face the loss of federal aid because they didn’t make enough effort to comply on time, officials said.
+ They are Alaska, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina and Washington, plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
+ Nearly 80 percent of undergraduates work while attending college, according to a brief report released today by the American Council on Education.
+ Using federal data, researchers found that, on average, students spend 30 hours per week at their jobs, and 23 percent of full-time students work 35 or more hours per week while in college.
+ Paying college expenses and earning spending money are the main reasons students say they work, mostly in off-campus jobs.
+ They also cite parental expectations: 63 percent of working dependent students say their parents expect them to work while in college.
+ One surprise noted in the study was that many affluent students also work long hours while in college.
