Featured article: 5 Steps To Make Your Own Scholarship

Finding scholarships can be difficult, time consuming work, particularly if you have exotic hobbies (for example, you may practice a little known form of yoga) or other characteristics that are distinctive, but that are not well-funded by more popular scholarship programs. If you find that existing scholarships can’t fit the bill, and you don’t want to rely exclusively on student loans to pay for college, then why not start your own scholarship? The basics of getting a scholarship fund up and running are relatively easy to do, relatively cheap to do, and can yield tremendous results. Here’s how.

1. Create a web site for yourself.

You’ll need a place to call home, somewhere on the Web that you can present your case for why individuals and corporations should help you get through college. There are various avenues that are either free or low cost:

Ideally, if you can, use option 3 so that you can add things like Blogs to your personal web site.

2. Create your content.

When it comes to creation, think of your personal site like a generic scholarship application. Put up an essay about yourself - provide as much relevant information as you can. If you have rich media content - videos, podcasts, etc. - be sure to feature them as well (if appropriate). Remember, what sets you apart and above the crowd is what should be center stage on your personal scholarship web site.

One important thing to do is disclose as much as you feel comfortable about your financials, about your personal financial situation. Asking for help paying for college is easier when you can demonstrate financial need to the people you’re making an appeal to. It may also be easier to ask for help if you can clearly detail what your plans are and how completing a college education with as little debt as possible will work to further your plans.

3. Set up a contribution mechanism.

Accepting contributions is the most important aspect of your personal scholarship web site. Give donors as many avenues for helping as possible, such as PayPal, a mailing address for paper checks, and so forth. Be sure that the avenues for donation are explicit and obvious for visitors to find. Make it as easy as possible for people to donate to your education.

4. Locate companies.

Once you’ve got the groundwork in place for your campaign, it’s time to find people to ask for help. Craft an appropriate cover letter, and then get a hold of a business directory for your area (such as the Boston Business Journal). Inside these types of publications you’ll find lists of the area’s noteworthy companies - big and small, new and old. Start locating companies that are relevant to your field of study - if you’re looking to major in advertising, then look for advertising firms in your area.

5. Ask for help.

The appeal for help is going to be one of the most difficult things to do initially. However, after a few letters, emails, and phone calls, asking for help gets increasingly easier. Writing your appeal should cover a few points - think of it like a cover letter for a job, in the sense that it should be concise, powerful, and clear.

  • Cover why you’re asking for money (financial need, etc.)
  • Cover what you’re studying in college and how you’ll use your education
  • Cover what value you can bring to your donors

The last point is the most critical. There are those individuals and companies who will make a contribution simply because they wish to help students advance their education, and for that, we’re grateful. However, there are also those who would be motivated to donate if they received something, even something small, in exchange for their contribution. Some ideas for this include:

  • Links on your web site
  • Mentions in your podcast, blog, video blog, or YouTube videos
  • Wearing a t-shirt promoting your donors

What creative things can you offer of value to prospective donors? The more you can come up with, the more compelling your appeal for help will be.

Once you’ve determined what and how you’ll ask for help, there’s nothing left but to do it. Good luck - and let us know how it works out for you when you try it!

Featured Article: Manage your finances with your cell phone

Last month we covered how to do a simple one page budget, which is more or less a cash flow statement - an essential tool for getting a grip on your real financial situation. However, it’s easy to fall behind on your budget. Little things like a cup of coffee or an ice cream can instantly throw off your expense calculations, and reconciling it can be a difficult, time-consuming task, sometimes so frustrating that you give up on your budget entirely.

Well, we here at the Student Loan Network may have developed *the* solution to your problem if you have a cell phone (mobile phone for our international audience). It’s an elegant solution that once implemented is so easy to manage that you’ll wonder how you did without it for so long. Here’s how:

Step 1. Set up a GMail account if you don’t have one. If you do, create a new label called Personal Finance. Once that’s created, set up a filter on your GMail to label any message from K7.net with the Personal Finance label.

Step 2. Visit K7 and sign up for a free voicemail box. Make sure you select to have messages emailed to you.

http://www.k7.net
(disclosure: we receive absolutely nothing for mentioning them)

Step 3. Program this free number into your cell phone. Ideally, use a space or the letter A in front of the name on your phone so that it’s always at the top of your list, like this:

-Phone Book-
A Expense Tracker
John Smith
Tom Smith
Terry Smith etc.

Step 4. Optionally, add the number to your speed dial.

Step 5. When you’re out and about, and you spend some money, pull out your phone and dial your expense tracker, and leave yourself a voice message, like “Spent $20 on dinner at the Thai restaurant August 12, 2006″.

Step 6. Your voice mail message will be emailed to your GMail account for you.

Step 7. When you’re ready to sit down and work on your budget, go to your GMail account and click on the Personal Finance label. This will bring up all of your voice mail messages. Download them to your computer and listen to them in order as you do your budget.

Step 8. As a bonus, load them onto your iPod or media player like WinAmp, and listen to them one after another as you do your budget.

That’s the instant cell phone expense tracker! It’s so easy, so fast, and you don’t have to carry around five pounds of gear just to manage your expenses. Sit down with your one page budget each week and get your personal finances back in order!

Featured article: How much can you responsibly borrow?

Figuring out what you can borrow for student loans can be tricky, particularly if you’re still in school, or not even to college yet. Choose right, and you’ll be able to enjoy a comfortable standard of living after college, pursuing the life path you want. Choose wrong, and you get crushed by debt, or you don’t go to/finish college. How do you determine what is a reasonable amount to borrow?

Work in reverse. Debt has to be paid off, so figure out how much debt is sustainable. Most financial planners advocate not exceeding 10% of your net income for debt service, so that’s a good number to remember. What you can pay is of course dependent on how much money you make.

Statistically, college graduates average a starting salary around $30,000 per year. This is highly dependent on where you live, the cost of living, etc., but $30K for liberal arts, up to $50K in medical and technology fields seem to be about the national norms.

Let’s work backwards now. From gross pay, we’re going to write of 1/3 of the salary to taxes and mandatory deductions (social security, etc.). Yup. Uncle Sam takes that much. Here’s the result, your NET income after taxes:

$30K gross: $20,000 net
$40K gross: $26,700 net
$50K gross: $33,300 net

Now, divide each by 12 and you get your net monthly income.

$30K gross: $20,000 net = $1,666/month
$40K gross: $26,700 net = $2,225/month
$50K gross: $33,300 net = $2,775/month

Okay. Now, let’s assume you are free and clear of all other debts (credit card, auto, etc.) at the time of graduation and you just have student loans. You can now afford to make the following maximum payments at a 10% debt service to net income ratio:

$30K gross: $20,000 net = $1,666/month = $166/month
$40K gross: $26,700 net = $2,225/month = $223/month
$50K gross: $33,300 net = $2,775/month = $276/month

Today’s federal student loan interest rates are 6.8% for Stafford Federal Student Loans. Based on this, we can use a student loan consolidation calculator in reverse to see the maximum amount of money you can borrow at 6.8% with and without consolidating your federal student loans.

$166/month = $14,424 if you don’t consolidate, $18,700 if you consolidate
$223/month = $19,378 if you don’t consolidate, $29,213 if you consolidate
$276/month = $23,983 if you don’t consolidate, $39,765 if you consolidate

The higher your estimated income at graduation is, the more you can afford to borrow, and if you consolidate your federal student loans upon graduation, you will be able to borrow more. This is a pretty good methodology for figuring out how much you can afford to borrow - and a good example of how overborrowing can limit your career choices to jobs that can pay for your student loans.

Featured article: 5 ways to earn spending money

Having a little extra spending money in college is always a welcome thing - a little extra cash for Saturday night, a nice lunch out every now and then, or even to make rent. Spending money can be relatively easy to come by if you know where to look. Here’s 5 places online you can look for some “beer money”; for some, you won’t even have to leave your desk! All of the programs listed here are free to join; no money ever leaves your pocket.

1. Got a blog? PayPerPost.com is looking for bloggers of all kinds to write short posts about all sorts of subjects. Posts can pay anywhere from $2.50 to $45 per blog post and you don’t have to write much more than a couple of paragraphs. If your blog qualifies (at least 90 days old, at least one post a day, all public), you can apply for the program. I can say from personal experience, having earned $12 last month, that the program actually DOES pay you, which is nice.

2. Know anyone who’s graduated recently? The Student Loan Network’s StudentATM program offers $100 per completed, returned student loan consolidation application. Get a few folks to consolidate their federal student loans, and get paid when they return their completed applications to the Student Loan Network. Our top participant has earned $17,000 since signing up in April 2006. (Our last check to them was for $7,600 - not bad for a month’s work!)

3. Love music? Set up an iTunes affiliate account on your personal web site and ask your friends to purchase their music legally through your site. They’ll pay the same amount, but you’ll receive 5% of their purchases.

4. Got a blog, web site, podcast, or other online presence with a specific industry focus? Commission Junction offers a huge number of products and services in nearly every industry. Find stuff you’d recommend anyway and promote it with special links on your site. You can earn anywhere from mere pennies to hundreds of dollars, depending on which programs you participate in.

5. This one doesn’t involve money, but it does involve free pizza. Google is looking for students to participate in their Google Ambassador program. In exchange for promoting Google to engineering, computer science, and technology students, Google will allow you to call in a study break pizza pretty much whenever you want. You’ll also get Google schwag to wear on campus.

Let us know if you’ve been able to earn some money with any of these programs (or pizza, in the case of the last program) - and if you know of any others, please don’t hesitate to let us know. Email financialaidpodcast@gmail.com with your ideas and feedback!
