From Banknet360: Sallie Mae, Nelnet, and Citigroup saw their stocks dip over the course of the past couple of days due to the election.
Should Congress alleviate stress on borrowers, it would reverse several provisions in the recently passed Deficit Reduction Act of 2005, which raised student loan interest rates and cut roughly $12 billion from student aid programs, many of which helped low-income borrowers.
More BankNet360: Student lenders and other industry experts expect student loan securitization volume to rise along with the cost of college education this academic year, despite a predicted 10% decline in overall U.S. asset-backed securities in 2007.
College tuition, fees, and room and board are expected to rise 5.6% and 5.7%, respectively, for four-year public institutions and private schools, according to the College Board. This will create a steady stream of student loans to pool into securitizations in the coming years, the same group of lenders said at a recent ABS conference.
New York-based Merrill Lynch predicts that student loan ABS issuance will reach between $75 billion and $85 billion by yearend, then higher in 2008.
