Self Identify for New Media at Conferences
Ever go to a conference, take a bunch of photos and recordings, and wonder about fair use and all that? I have. Here’s an idea to help make the flow of information more simple – give away free armbands to let people opt into the kind of coverage they want to experience. I’ve made a sample PDF with 3 levels of Creative Commons licensure – non-consent, consent for non commercial use, and consent for commercial use. Print one out and wear it at the next conference or event you attend!
Obviously, you can make armbands or badges with any variation on these themes – audio only, video only, regional Creative Commons licenses, however you want to mix it.

This idea and its implementation is released under Creative Commons By-SA-3.0.

So when are you going to make these into t-shirts and send them to me?
Brilliant idea.
But while I agree that red=stop and green=go are generally recognizable, you might want to consider recoloring them for the benefit of anyone who’s red/green colorblind.
Maybe Red=Stop, Non-Consent
Yellow=NonCommercial only, and
Blue=Full consent…
Nice idea, in theory, but I’m not really sure that passes a ‘reality test’.
Who would accidentally show up at an event without realizing that there’s going to be pictures taken, audio recorded, or video shot?
If it just to promote the idea of CC, then I think that there is some merit to the promotion, but for actual use….I’m not seeing it.
So when is the t-shirt line coming out?
And we need someone to work on plugins that can detect people wearing the ‘I do not consent’ tag so they can be automagically be removed from images.
All flippancy aside, this is actually a good idea. Yo do indeed appear to have way too much free time Mr Penn.

Hot! I’ll print some out for the PLA Blog at ALA in June.
I see an entire product line now. Personally, I’d carry the middle one as a purse!
Cool, Chris. Thanks!
You have way too much time on your hand Chris… *grin*
Great! We had a discussion about CC licenses at yesterday’s Boston Media Makers meeting.
There’s lots of video over here:
