This Blog Post is Worth $150

BulbHow would you like an extra $150?

Would you find a use for it? Dinner out, maybe, or a decent gift for someone you care about?

Here is how to get $150. Replace every incandescent lightbulb in your home, apartment, or dorm room with a compact fluorescent light bulb. Every single one of them.

In a standard apartment with 10 bulbs @ 75 watts each, assuming 16 cents per kilowatt hour, switching out all the bulbs with a 13 watt compact fluorescent will save 905 kilowatt hours per year. That is $148.53 per year that you can take off your electric bill and put back in your wallet.

Oh, and you’ll be doing the environment a huge favor, too, but this is a financial blog, so the focus is on savings. More money in your pocket. Each bulb will pay for itself in about 4 months, and last on average about 4 years. Figure out your savings with this calculator.

Help the environment, reduce waste, and put a Benjamin and a couple of Jacksons in your pocket. What’s not to love?

Another point to note: make sure when the CFL does eventually die that you do not just throw them in the trash. CFL’s contain a non-trivial amount of mercury and therefore should be routed to a proper recycling center rather than disposing of them in a landfill.

Brad – what I did was simply put all the old ones in a box in the basement, in case a bulb went out – I have lots of short term spares!

Good advice, but should you wait until your old ones burn out or bite the bullet and do them all at once? I’m sure there’s a trade-off on cost in there somewhere.

Yuppers – great advice indeed. Saw this on a show on HGTV, Ed Bagley (I think) goes around greening up all his Holllywood buddies houses. They went over the cost of the bulbs and energy – I couldn’t believe it! Good get Mr. Penn!

    Great advice indeed.

Before we put our house on the market we went around and changed all the bulbs in the house over. Figured we’d be doing the next owners a favor AND we felt good about it knowing that we were doing our little part for the greater good.
