Community Question: Where do you get your beer money?
Here’s an open question for the community – I’ve talked in the past on the show about beer money and where you get yours.
Definition: beer money is the discretionary money you earn every month. It’s not part of your paycheck, just a few dollars extra for luxuries and discretionary expenses, whether it’s beer, lottery tickets, eating out, or other non-essential spending.
Addition: beer money also is ideally passive income, which means that once you’ve done the work and distributed it, the work can earn you money without you having to do additional work. For example, once you take a photo and upload it, you don’t need to do anything else with the photo. It’s for sale, and the only thing that determines your income level on the photo is your marketing of it, and the marketing of the service you use.
Some examples of beer money I’ve covered in the past:
- Selling your photos online
- Selling music online
- Affiliate programs like iTunes
- Selling ads on ad networks like Adsense and Adbrite

My wife and I put most of our expenses and any big purchases on an Amazon credit card. I’m not trying to give them a commercial but we often get $25.00 and sometimes $100.00 in comps per month just for using the credit card. And we can buy almost everything that they sell using the gift certificates we get in the mail. We don’t keep a balance on the card, so it’s essentially free money/products. And we get spending money for spending money we would spend anyway. : )
Well aside from working two jobs, I’ve found that if you only hang out once every two weeks, your buddies are much more likely to buy your booze. Remember, familiarity breeds contempt.
My “beer money” (for me- “gear money”) comes from consulting, side projects, tutoring twice a week at the Middle School- money that my family doesn’t depend on, and I can plow easily back into this social media venture. It pays for gear, conferences, and the like. Some small sums from Amazon affiliates….. I keep my new business operating on a budget neutral to budget positive basis, no credit required, and it paid for small xmas presents to internet collegues, so I am happy.
