Student Financial Aid News: Nursing scholarship, saving money on tuition

From the Chronicle:

Seventy-one percent of high-school guidance counselors this year saw an increase in the number of their students who chose a more-affordable option over their “dream school,” according to a survey released today. The survey of high-school counselors was released by the National Association for College Admission Counseling, along with a companion survey of college admissions offices.

I’m very pleased to see that students are making more prudent financial choices. Hopefully, continued pricing pressure on colleges will encourage schools to rein in costs and reduce prices, as one would hope from market forces. This in turn will reduce students’ need to borrow federal student loans and private student loans, helping them graduate with less debt.

From NASFAA and the Tribune:

“Community colleges can be a great bargain and a good start toward a four-year degree. But a common stumbling block is the sometimes tricky transfer to a four-year college or university,” the Chicago Tribune reports. “Done wrong, a transfer can waste money and cause undue hassle, experts said. … Among the biggest issues of attending community college is planning a transfer, especially making sure you’re not wasting time or money on community college courses that you will have to retake, and pay for again, at a four-year school.”

Planning a transfer of credits and asking about transfer policies is always a good idea when doing research about which schools you plan to attend. Don’t forget that another way to save money for college is to test out of as many courses as you can, assuming the college or university accepts CLEP credits. CLEP, as we’ve talked about previously, could save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars a year.
