Weekly Financial Aid Roundup

Record debt: College seniors who graduated in 2008 carried an average of $23,200 in student loan debt. Meanwhile, unemployment climbed from an already challenging 7.6 percent in the third quarter of 2008 to 10.6 percent in 2009 — the highest third-quarter rate for college graduates aged 20 to 24 this decade. The Project on Student Debt’s new report, Student Debt and the Class of 2008, and an interactive online map include debt levels for the 50 states and District of Columbia and nearly 2,000 U.S. colleges and universities.

Economic rebound bad for scholarships? “When the economy was in free fall early in 2009, officials at hundreds of private colleges felt a little panic: How would they find enough qualified students willing to fork over anything close to their sticker prices, which average $35,000 a year? (And that’s before books, transportation, and other extras.) So they dramatically increased the amount of grants and scholarships they offered to students accepted into their classes of 2013,” U.S. News World Report reports. “John Strassburger, president of Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa., and president of the Council of Independent Colleges, a group of about 500 private colleges, says some financial aid officers now believe they went overboard last year.”

Scholarship Update

A scholarship in honor of Patrick Swayze and his wife Lisa Niemi has been established by the Arabian Horse Foundation (AHF), based in Denver, Colo. Swayze and Niemi have had close ties to the Arabian horse breed and owned Arabian horses for many years. The Foundation is the charitable arm of the Arabian Horse Association (AHA), also based in Denver. The scholarship will be awarded annually in the spring to a youth who is involved with Arabian horses and aspires to a career in the performing arts.
