Academic probation may cost you your federal aid, or worse, your enrollment in that institution.
Satisfactory academic progress standards are set by the postsecondary school you are attending, which means no one size fits all solution exists. The formal academic probation process at Southern Cal may be entirely different from that of Florida State. Generally speaking, [...]

By JOSEPH MARR CRONIN and HOWARD E. HORTON
The public has become all too aware of the term “bubble” to describe an asset that is irrationally and artificially overvalued and cannot be sustained. The dot-com bubble burst by 2000. More recently the overextended housing market collapsed, helping to trigger a credit meltdown. The stock market has declined more than 30 percent in the past year, as companies once considered flagship investments have withered in value.
Is it possible that higher education might be the next bubble to burst? Some early warnings suggest …

Students to schools: No thanks

It is high school students, and not the schools, that are doing the rejecting these days. And not because they don’t want to go to school, but because they can not afford to. The economic downturn has student hopefuls putting the breaks on their education, at least at the pricey institutions.
The market volatility has forced many students to re-evaluate their situation. Senior Tess Rusin had her heart set on attending New York University, but now says it’s too expensive. “When the economy took a downturn, 66% percent of my college …

Daily Aid 42: Tuition and preparedness, jobs, mailbag
Student Financial Aid News
A few days ago, the state of South Carolina’s student loan agency announced that it would no longer be able to meet private student loan needs beginning as early as spring of 2009. As always, feel free to check out www.PrivateStudentLoans.com, a Student Loan Network site, for additional options.
One of the quieter discussion topics at the recent MASFAA conference was on the topic of preparedness for college. It was pointed out by many that if you’re academically unprepared for college, …

Student Financial Aid News
+ Inside Higher Ed: A shift back to need-based aid isn’t hurting at least two colleges. In the last few years, some colleges have pulled back from the policies everyone else says they’d like to pull back from. Notably the sky hasn’t fallen (and neither have their admissions numbers). Consider the cases of Hamilton College, which completely eliminated merit aid to spend more on need-based aid, and of Tufts University, which imposed …

Student Financial Aid News
+ Charlie Miller, former Spellings Commission member, has come out with a huge article on Inside Higher Ed about the true value of a college degree
+ Substituting some of his own assumptions for those used by the board — including six years of tuition costs (and hence two fewer years of work), private college tuition instead of in-state public tuition, etc. — Miller calculates his own college premium. “[P”>MP3 fileroperly using the present value …

How Important Is Your Undergraduate Degree Brand?
Harvard. MIT. Yale. All brand names associated with top quality, top price education, and rightfully so as these institutions repeatedly churn out outstanding graduates (along with a ton of average ones, and a few substandard ones, like any school). That said, as colleges make decisions about who to admit, I’d like to throw out a controversial point of view:
The “brand” of your undergraduate degree is largely irrelevant in today’s marketplace.
Where you go to college is much, much less important to me as a hiring …
