Student Financial Aid News
From Inside Higher Ed:
To no one’s surprise, tuition is up this year, with the largest percentage increases coming at public institutions that face significant cuts in state appropriations.
The College Board released its annual studies on tuition and financial aid trends Tuesday, and tried to put a non-alarmist spin on numbers that are scary to many students and their families. For instance, board officials noted that, after adjusting for inflation, the average net price paid for tuition and fees by public four-year college students is lower in 2009-10 …

Student Financial Aid News
From Inside Higher Ed:
Surveys by two regional groups of financial aid directors suggest that, despite assurances from the U.S. Education Department, many college officials are worried about the impact that proposed changes in federal student loan programs will have on their institutions and students. The Western and Southern affiliates of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators both asked their members whose institutions are still in the lender-based Federal Family Education Loan Program about the impact they envision from President Obama’s proposal to shift all federal …

Daily Aid 125: Student loans still impacted by credit markets
Student Financial Aid News
From the New York Times:
A year after Washington rescued the big names of American finance, it’s still hard to get a loan. But the problem isn’t just tight-fisted banks. The continued disarray in debt-securitization markets, which in recent years were the source of roughly 60 percent of all credit in the United States, is making loans scarce and threatening to slow the economic recovery. Many of these markets are operating only because the government is propping them up. …

Daily Aid 124: Financial aid decreases from enrollment growth
Student Financial Aid News
From NASFAA:
“Enrollment and tuition at Mississippi’s eight public universities have been rising steadily, but the amount of financial aid provided by the state has not,” the NEMS Daily Journal reports. “In 2000, the state appropriated $30.1 million for financial aid. For the current year, it allocated $31.9 million, a 6 percent increase. Yet, during the same time period, enrollment at the eight public universities has increased 15.8 percent from 63,642 to 73,699. At the 15 community colleges, enrollment increased …

From NASFAA:
"A provision in this year's economic-stimulus law aimed at preventing states from cutting their education budgets may be having the opposite effect, according to a new memorandum by the Education Department's Office of Inspector General," The Chronicle of Higher Education reports. "Under the law's 'maintenance of effort' requirement, states that receive a share of the law's $54-billion in education aid must provide as much money for education in each fiscal year through 2011 as they did in the 2006 budget year. Struggling states that can show they are spending …

Student Financial Aid News
From Inside Higher Ed:
When it comes to policies that help the needy attend college, simplicity rules, and financial aid programs seem to be more effective when they link money to academic performance and/or support services for students. Those are the key findings of a paper, “Into College, Out of Poverty? Policies to Increase the Postsecondary Attainment of the Poor,” published this week by the National Bureau of Economic Research. The paper, by written David Deming of Harvard University and Susan Dynarski of the University of Michigan, was …

Student Financial Aid News
In all of the debate about changes to financial aid, lots of small stuff is getting overlooked, such as proposed changes to the Student Aid Report, the report that families and students get after successfully completing the FAFSA. The SAR in the past has been a hideously ugly, incredibly complex affair to attempt to decode. Happily, the Department of Education has been simplifying how the SAR looks and how it presents information to you. Here’s a preview of the new SAR compared to the old one.

Some great questions came in over the weekend in the Financial Aid Forums, so let’s answer some of those and share the knowledge.
FINAID2 asks: “If one is possibly aware of loan misuse (ex: Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans used for school and the PLUS loan is clearly use for personal fundage, not schooling, tuition, books, room&Board, etc. for the student) how does one report that?”
Federal student loans are disbursed first to the financial aid office, and once loan proceeds have been applied to any mandatory expenses, any remaining funds are disbursed …
