Susan: The school said if I get declined for the Parent Plus loan my child becomes eligible for additional money. Is that true?

Yes. If a parent is declined for a Parent Plus loan the student is able to take out additional unsubsidized Stafford loan funds in their name, with a denial letter.

FAFSA Tip: Definition of an Independent Student

You are an independent student if you meet one of the 11 standard requirements, which include:

  • You are at least 24 years old on the day you file your FAFSA
  • You are or will be enrolled in a masters or Doctoral degree program at the beginning of the school year
  • You are married on the day you file your FAFSA
