Featured Article: Free Stuff!

We know college can be financially taxing, regardless of where you study. This month, we present a look at some great free resources and software on the Web that will save you money. All of the software and services we list here are completely free - they require no commitment on your part. They're not "time bombs" designed to sucker you into buying - they're legitimately free, which means you can try them, and if you don't like them, simply delete them when you're done.

First, antivirus software. 2003 was called the year of the worm, in dubious honor of the fact that more email viruses and worms were sent than ever before. Pricey antivirus software and subscriptions don't help the problem; college students have better things to spend their money on. Our free stuff nod goes to AVG Grisoft for its AVG Antivirus for Home. They give it away, and keep the definitions for it as up to date as any of the "brand names". The software and the updates are free.

In keeping with the security theme, check out Zone Labs' ZoneAlarm Personal Firewall. It screens out hostile attacks and hackers, keeping your computer safe. Absolutely essential if you have high speed Internet access or are on a campus network! The basic edition, which meets the needs of 99% of surfers, is free.

Is someone spying on you? Recording what you do on the Internet? Go ahead and check for malicious software using Lavasoft's Ad-Aware 6 spyware detector. The software and updates are free.

Surfing the Web has become a laborious effort thanks to pop-ups, pop-unders, and other forms of advertising that seem to be designed to annoy as much as inform. We're not sure when advertising crossed the line into a form of visual assault, but it sure feels that way all over the Web. Take back your Web browsing experience with the incredibly fast, easy to use Mozilla Firefox Web browser. Built-in pop-up blocking, hostile ad blocking, and plugins to make browsing truly enjoyable again.

Get the best email software available, with built in spam filtering, easy filters, and the ability to manage all your mailboxes with Mozilla Thunderbird. Stop junk mail in its tracks, and disarm viruses long before they can do harm to your computer.

What does office suite software cost these days? Last we checked, it was in the hundreds of dollars for basic word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations. Most people, given the choice between two comparable products, would probably opt to save a few hundred dollars if they could have the same functionality, wouldn't they? Well, now you can get great free office software from the OpenOffice foundation. Word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and more, in one convenient package, and completely free.

Free photographs, music, and video don't have to be illegally gotten, not when there are scores of free libraries on the Web. Check out Project Gutenberg and the Creative Commons to find legal resources for the content you're looking for.

It kind of goes without saying, but we'll say it anyway. All the software and services provided here are provided without any warranty or service. If you install them and they eat your computer alive, it's not our fault. Caveat user.

Scholarship Notes

This month, we bring you a couple of technology scholarships, and an art scholarship for study abroad. As always, we remind you that this is a very, very, very small fraction of the scholarships available to students everywhere. We encourage you, if you want to get the maximum amount of free money for college, to enlist the services of our scholarship experts. We've sorted through over 2 million scholarships worth $14 billion.
