Do Parent PLUS Loans Belong In Financial Aid Award Letters?

Parent PLUS loans are a key component of many students’ college financing plans, but they might not be an appropriate line item in a financial aid award letter, a New America Foundation analyst argued Wednesday at a panel hosted by the organization in Washington, D.C. Approved recipients of a Parent PLUS loan can borrow up to a student’s Cost of Attendance (COA). Thus, when families immediately see a way to cover all their costs, they may prematurely jump into borrowing, said New America Foundation Policy Analyst Rachel Fishman at Wednesday’s event, “Parent PLUS or Minus: Promoting Access or Putting Parents At Risk?”
