“The budget deal that Congress struck this week is good news for students and researchers, who would be spared the worst of the automatic spending cuts set to take effect in January. But it’s bad and potentially fatal news for nonprofit lenders, who have struggled to redefine themselves since Congress ended the guaranteed-student-loan program three years ago,” The Chronicle of Higher Education reports.
