The Future of Perkins

Last week’s Omnibus spending bill provided funding levels for the Pell Grant, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), and Federal Work-Study (FWS) for award year 2014-15, but one recurring question still remains: What will happen to the Perkins Loan Program? If Congress does not enact legislation extending or repealing the authorization of the program before Sept. 30, 2014, the program would be eligible for an automatic one-year extension through Sept. 30, 2015, under section 422(s) of the General Education Provisions Act (GEPA).
