Student Financial Aid News
+ NASFAA: There is some confusion in the student aid community about whether FFELP loans made under the Ensuring Continued Access to Student Loans Act of 2008 (H.R. 5715) would retain any borrower benefits. The Act gives the Department temporary authority to purchase student loans when there is inadequate capital to meet borrower demand. The bill also makes changes to lender of last resort (LLR) provisions, which will also have an effect on borrower benefits made in the FFEL program.
+ Whether a loan is sold to the Department or originated under LLR, it is unlikely borrowers will see any front-end (reductions in origination fees) or back-end (reductions or benefits offered during repayment) benefits.
+ WSJ: Ambac and MBIA are on the razor’s edge – they guarantee bonds issued by lenders for sale on the market. A downgrade of these two guarantee agencies would lower the quality of a number of investments, sending a ripple effect through the economy.

Scholarship Update
+ Alesia writes in: Hey I was wondering if have come across a cross stitch scholarship or if one even exists?
+ Actually, yes, sort of. Cross stitch, I learned, is embroidery, and there are embroidery scholarships
+ Two Embroiderers’ Guild Scholarships of £1000 each are awarded annually to embroiderers to develop the practice of embroidery. One Scholarship is for embroiderers in the age category of 18 to 30 inclusive, and one is for embroiderers over 30 years of age.
+ The Guild defines embroidery as being all work stitched or derived from stitch. All applicants should have studied the practice of embroidery or stitched textiles through formal or informal learning.
+ The Scholarships are to support embroiderers to undertake projects which further their own embroidery practice.
+ Working with the Embroiderers’ Guild during the Scholarship year provides each Scholar with opportunities to be introduced to the Guild’s network of Members, Branches and practising professionals. The Guild holds additional funding to enable them to participate in Guild activities.
+ Deadline February each year
