Even if your MySpace (or your livejournal or opendiary or any other blog) is private, even if all the people on your list are people you know, even if you never use your real last name, and even if the e-mail address connected to it is one you never gave out to anyone, it’s still not 100% private.

A friend had a person on her MySpace who posted a blog about something that happened at work, and this person posted confidential information about a client – for all her friends to see. My friend happened to know this person being talked about and my friend also happened to know exactly how the manager of the person on her list could be reached. My friend made several screenshots . . . and e-mailed them to the manager.

When you are on the internet, you are in public.

I feel people can read this stuff and still not get it. I know a person who lost their job due to the info on his my space and he still focuses on the fact that they invaded his privacy. Which is stupid because his space was public! But even if it wasn’t there are still ways of chaining through the site to find out more than you thought you could about a person!

i think this administrater was dumb but i do feel that if you don’t care if people know this stuff about you then more power to you. i have a profile on myspace and it is not private because i feel i have nothing to hide..i am also not dumb enough to put hints towards illegal drug use on my profile even if i really was into drugs i wouldn’t put it on my profile…cops use myspace too…lol.

There are ways to safely use myspace.. Make it completely private and only add people you 100% trust, and make sure your photo is generic and nothing suggestive or incriminating, as well as the quote area left blank (because it can be seen next to your photo without displaying your profile), or saying something positive or non-offensive. I strongly believe in profiles being private and only adding people you trust and know.

People born after 1980 should know better. Anyone born after that will learn the hard way that these types of social networking spaces, which seem fantasy where you can act out or say all of the stupid, childish things that come to your brain, has consequences.

As sites like Facebook become the new “Top Forty Under Forty” of American Business, some truly talented people might miss out on great opportunities because business leaders do not want a VP of Compliance who’s MySpace handle is “Keigmiester.”

I think this issue represents one of the many “social fallout” of technology that we will come to exam in the next decade.
